Scout Lab

Scouting basics

What is a scouting report in football?

A football scouting report is a short game-plan document about your next opponent. It shows the formations they use most, their run and pass tendencies by down and distance, their key players, how their defense lines up and blitzes, and the few things your team must do to win. Coaches use it to plan practice.

Scout Lab builds these reports from your opponent's game film.

How do I scout an opponent in football?

Get at least one full game of your opponent on film. Chart every snap: down, distance, field position, formation, personnel, play type and result. Then group the plays to find what they do most in each situation, who their best players are, and where they struggle. Turn that into a short list of keys for practice.

If you would rather spend that time coaching, Scout Lab charts the film and sends the finished report.

How do I break down game film?

Watch the game one play at a time and tag each snap in a spreadsheet: quarter, down, distance, hash, field zone, offensive formation, play call, defensive front, coverage and result. Watch offense, defense and special teams in separate passes. When every snap is tagged, sort and count the tags to see the patterns.

Wide sideline or end-zone film that shows all 22 players is the easiest to chart.

How do I find an opponent's tendencies?

Tag every snap, then count what the opponent does in each situation: run or pass on 1st and 10, 3rd and short, 3rd and long, the red zone and the two-minute drill. Do the same by formation and personnel. A tendency is anything they do clearly more often than not, like running from one formation most of the time.

Two or three games of film make the tendencies much more reliable than one.

How many games of film do I need to scout an opponent?

One full game is enough to see an opponent's formations, key players and favorite plays. Two or three games give you much more reliable down-and-distance and red-zone tendencies, because the sample is bigger and you see how they adjust to different defenses. Recent games are worth more than early-season film.

How do you scout a flag football opponent?

Flag football scouting follows the same idea with fewer players. Chart each play's formation, who gets the ball, the route concepts the QB likes, and how the defense rushes and covers. Pay close attention to who the QB looks at first on key downs, and which defenders pull flags. Always apply your league's own rules.

Scout Lab builds reports for flag, youth and local leagues, tailored to each league's format.

What is a self-scout in football?

A self-scout is a scouting report on your own team. You chart your own film the way an opponent would, to find the tendencies you are giving away, like always running from one formation or passing on every 3rd and long. It shows you what the next opponent will see, so you can break your own habits first.

Scout Lab offers Auto Scout, a self-scout report on your own team.

What film angle is best for scouting?

The best scouting film is a wide angle from high on the sideline or from the end zone, showing all 22 players from the snap to the end of the play. Zoomed-in TV-style shots hide receivers and the secondary. Video from the stands works too, as long as you can see the whole field.

About Scout Lab

What is Scout Lab?

Scout Lab is an opponent scouting service for American football coaches. You send game film of your next opponent, and Scout Lab sends back a scouting report with formations, down-and-distance tendencies, key players, defense, weaknesses and a game plan. It works fully remote, for youth, high school, college, semi-pro and flag teams.

Reports are available in English or Spanish.

How does Scout Lab work?

Create a free account, upload one game of your opponent or send a film link, and Scout Lab charts every snap. Each play is tagged by formation, down and distance, play type and result, then turned into tendencies and a game plan. Your finished report is delivered in your team's private Scout Lab portal.

Is the first scouting report free?

Yes, for coaches, athletic directors and staff of an active team. Every new free account gets one credit for one free VIP scouting report, one per team, subject to approval. We verify every request to filter out bots and fake accounts. No credit card is needed. Create your account at scoutlabhq.com/free, upload one game of your opponent, and the report lands in your portal within 48 hours after we receive the film.

How do I send film to Scout Lab?

The easiest way is the upload link at scoutlabhq.com/free: create a free account and upload a video file or paste a film link. One full game of your opponent is all we need. We accept Hudl film, Facebook or YouTube streams, video files, and video from the stands that shows the whole field.

You can also email a film link to coach@scoutlabhq.com.

How do I send Hudl film?

A plain Hudl share link usually asks us to log in, so it does not open on our side. Instead, download the game in Hudl and forward Hudl's download email to coach@scoutlabhq.com, or add coach@scoutlabhq.com to your Hudl team. Either way we get the full game, and nothing changes in your Hudl account.

How long does a scouting report take?

Every Scout Lab report (Basic, Advanced and Pro) is delivered within 48 hours. The clock starts once we have all the film. Send film right after your opponent plays, so your staff gets the report with more practice days left before the game. For a game this weekend, ask about the 24-hour rush, which has limited spots.

What's in a Scout Lab report?

Every report covers the opponent's formations with usage percentages, run and pass tendencies, 3–5 key players and 3 keys to win. Deeper reports add down-and-distance, 3rd-down and red-zone tendencies, defensive fronts, coverages and blitzes, special teams, and a game plan with play diagrams. The free VIP report includes the deeper analysis.

Is my film and report private?

Yes. Your report is delivered in your team's own Scout Lab portal, which only your team's login can open. Every page of the report is watermarked with your team's name and locked against copying and editing, so a shared copy traces back to it. We only use your contact info to reach you about your report.

Can Scout Lab self-scout my own team?

Yes. Auto Scout is a self-scout report on your own team. Send your own game film and Scout Lab charts it the same way it charts an opponent, showing the tendencies you are giving away by formation, down and distance and field zone. Some packages include a mid-season self-scout.

Do you scout flag football and youth leagues?

Yes. Scout Lab works with youth, high school, college, semi-pro, local league and flag football teams. Every report is tailored to your league's rules and format, so a flag report focuses on the passing game, route concepts and rush, while an 11-man report covers the full run game, fronts and special teams.

How much does a football scouting report cost?

Your first VIP scouting report is free with a new Scout Lab account, one per team. After that, coaches can choose a single-game report, a multi-game report, or a season package that covers every opponent. Current packages are listed on the Scout Lab home page, with secure online checkout.

Can I talk to someone before I send film?

Yes. Leave your name, team and phone or email in the contact form on the Scout Lab home page, and we'll get back to you by text, WhatsApp or email to answer questions and set up your first report. You don't need to send any film to ask a question.
