Flag vs tackle football scouting: what changes

Scouting flag and tackle football starts the same way: chart every snap of film and look for what the opponent does most in each situation. The difference is what you chart. Flag scouting focuses on spacing, the rusher, coverage and plays near no-run zones. Tackle scouting adds personnel, blocking schemes, fronts and special teams across eleven players.

What stays the same

Whatever the format, scouting answers the same three questions: what does the opponent do most, when do they do it, and who makes it work. The process is the same too: get film that shows the whole field, chart every snap with the same labels, group the snaps by situation, and turn the patterns into a short plan your players can remember.

What changes

Flag rules vary a lot by league, so start every flag scout by reading the league's rules. Formats differ (5v5, 7v7 and others), and so do rushing rules, where runs are allowed, field size and how teams earn a first down. In tackle, the rulebook is more uniform, but there are many more players and moving parts to track on every snap.

TopicFlag footballTackle football (11-man)
Players per sideUsually 5 or 7, depending on the league11
Blocking and contactNo tackling; blocking is limited or not allowed in most leaguesFull blocking and tackling; blocking schemes matter
The pass rushOften a single rusher who must start a set distance back, by league ruleFronts, stunts and blitzes from many positions
Running the ballMany leagues have no-run zones and limits on who can runFull run game with many schemes
Extra pointsIn many leagues, teams choose between tries from different distances for different pointsKick or two-point try
Special teamsOften no kicking game, or a simplified oneKickoffs, punts, field goals and returns

Always check your own league's rulebook; the table shows common differences, not rules for every league.

What to chart in flag football

  • Formations and spacing. Stacks, bunches and spread looks, and where their best receiver lines up.
  • The quarterback's first read. With fewer players, many flag offenses lean on one or two favorite targets. Chart who gets the ball on key downs.
  • The rusher. Who rushes, how often, and in which situations. On offense, note how fast the quarterback gets the ball out.
  • Coverage. Man or zone, and whether it changes near the goal line or on obvious passing downs.
  • No-run zones. Where your league has them, offenses must pass there, so their favorite plays in those zones are predictable and worth charting.
  • Extra-point choices. Where tries are worth different points, note which they pick and what they call.

What to chart in tackle football

  • Personnel groups and the formations they come out in.
  • Run game: the main run schemes, the direction and who carries the ball.
  • Pass game: quick game, drop-back, play-action and screens, and the quarterback's favorite targets by down.
  • Defense: base front, coverages and pressure by down and distance.
  • Special teams: kicker range, punt formation, return tendencies and any fakes.
  • Situations: 3rd down, red zone, goal line and two-minute.

For the charting method itself, see down and distance tendencies on film.

Film tips for each

For both formats, the best film shows the whole field from a high angle. A sideline or end-zone camera is ideal, but a steady phone video from high in the stands works if every player stays in the frame. In flag, keep the whole field in view on every snap, because one receiver out of frame can hide the play. In tackle, a wide angle that shows the line and the secondary together lets you chart both the front and the coverage.

Scouting youth teams

Youth and flag players are often minors. Identify players by jersey number only, keep reports inside your staff, and focus on schemes rather than individuals. That is how Scout Lab builds every youth and flag report.
